To mark the 30th Anniversary of the American
classic ‘Pony Car’ Ford again redesigned the Mustang after a very successful 15
year run of the model that paced the Indianapolis 500 at the beginning of its
production run. The vehicle project was referred
to as SN-95 on the platform known as the Fox-4.
After the introduction, and well received sales figures
of the new Mustang, Ford’s (Special Vehicle Team) took it upon themselves to
drive three cars to Indianapolis and asked the Speedway if they would like to
play with them on the track. Executives
at the Speedway were delighted to test the new cars, and with that, they drove
them back to Dearborn to await any thoughts from the owners of the
speedway. Negotiations began shortly
thereafter to agree on a price for having the car as an Official Pace Car for
the May race.
On December 29th, 1993, the 1994 Mustang Pace
Car was unveiled to an invitation only Ford crowd prior to its display at the
Auto Show within the Indiana Convention Center.
Production of the Ford Mustang Cobra convertible was
limited to 1,000 with only certified SVT (Special Vehicle Team) member Ford
dealerships being able to obtain a car for sale by their business. Because the demand was so high for these
special vehicles, they were generally sold at a premium above the $26,845
price.
The top of the line SVT Cobra convertibles came with these
standards:
- A
front bumper fascia that incorporated round auxiliary lights
- Pedestal-mounted
rear spoiler with an LED brake light built into it
- Rear
bumper panel that read “Mustang”
- Cobra
fender emblems
- Steering
wheel embossed with the word “Cobra”
- Indy
‘wings and wheel’ emblem embroidered into the top portion of the saddle tan
color seats
- Unique
Cobra floor mats
- White-faced
gauges (including a 160-mph speedometer)
- The
stick shift knob with boot wrapped in leather.
All pace cars produced were in Rio Red with saddle tan
leather interiors and Saddle color convertible tops. Just as the 1979 pace cars produced for sale
the decals were shipped inside the car and left to the buyer’s discretion to
have the dealer install them before they took possession of their limited
edition vehicle.
After delivery to the dealership, all of the cars sold
out within a very short time.
